Core Physical Education

Core Physical Education at NSSFC promotes lifelong participation in physical activity, supporting students’ physical health, mental wellbeing and personal development.

Core PE is not examined. Instead, it focuses on:

  • Developing physical competence

  • Improving fitness and resilience

  • Promoting positive mental health

  • Encouraging teamwork and leadership

  • Building lifelong healthy habits

The curriculum is sequenced across Years 7–11 to ensure students experience a broad range of team and individual activities. Students progressively develop tactical understanding, technical skill and personal responsibility.

Assessment is formative, focusing on effort, engagement, teamwork and personal improvement rather than examination outcomes.

Students are encouraged to attend extra-curricular clubs, represent the school in fixtures and take on leadership roles within lessons.

 


Key Stage 3

Curriculum Intent

At KS3, students build confidence, teamwork skills and physical literacy across invasion games, individual challenges and aesthetic activities.

Students develop:

  • Fundamental movement skills

  • Tactical understanding of invasion and net games

  • Fitness and health-related knowledge

  • Leadership through warm-ups and peer support

  • Respect, sportsmanship and resilience

Key Stage 4

Core PE continues in Years 10 and 11, maintaining a focus on health, fitness and lifelong participation.

Students experience a wider range of activities and increased independence in preparation for adulthood.

Post-16 Opportunities

Core PE is not delivered as a compulsory timetabled subject in Sixth Form. However, students are supported in maintaining active lifestyles through:

  • Enrichment sport provision

  • Access to leisure centre facilities

  • Tutor time wellbeing inputs

  • Inter-house and enrichment competitions

  • Leadership and coaching opportunities

These opportunities support students’ physical and mental wellbeing during post-16 study.


Literacy, Careers and Personal Development

Vocabulary
Students develop understanding of sport-specific terminology including tactics, invasion principles, aerobic endurance, agility, balance and coordination.

Knowledge Organisers
Each activity block includes key terminology and expectations to support understanding of rules and strategies.

Careers Links
Exposure to careers such as physiotherapy, sports science, coaching, strength and conditioning, teaching and health professions.
