Maths
|
Mathematics at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College is carefully sequenced from Year 7 to Year 13 to develop confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians. Our curriculum is built around five core strands:
Content is deliberately sequenced so that foundational knowledge is secured first, before increasing levels of abstraction and problem solving are introduced. Regular assessment and Question Level Analysis (QLA) inform responsive teaching and bespoke curriculum adjustments where needed. Independent learning is supported through SPARX Maths, ensuring regular retrieval and personalised practice. |

Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, students secure strong foundations across number, algebra, geometry, ratio and data handling. The curriculum is structured into clearly defined units, each supported by Learning Journeys and Knowledge Organisers.
Students develop:
-
Fluency with integers, fractions and decimals
-
Confidence with ratio and proportion
-
Secure algebraic manipulation
-
Understanding of shape, area, perimeter and volume
-
Statistical interpretation and probability

Key Stage 4
Students follow either:
-
Foundation pathway
-
Higher pathway
Movement between pathways is informed by assessment evidence.
The curriculum is structured into core units including:
-
Basic number
-
Geometry and measures
-
Standard form
-
Sequences
-
Ratio and proportion
-
Angles and transformations
-
Algebraic manipulation
-
Linear graphs
-
Pythagoras and trigonometry
-
Statistics and probability
In Year 11, the curriculum becomes increasingly responsive. Bespoke sequences are designed using QLA data to address gaps and maximise outcomes.

Literacy, Careers and Personal Development
Across all key stages:
-
Mathematical vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited
-
Knowledge organisers support retrieval and precision
-
Careers links are embedded within units
-
SMSC and personal development themes are integrated into contextual problem solving
