Teaching, Learning & Assessment
At Northallerton School & Sixth Form College, we believe that excellent teaching transforms lives. Every student, regardless of starting point, deserves ambitious, inclusive and intellectually challenging lessons.
Our approach to teaching and learning is rooted in the best available educational research and shaped by what we know about how children learn best.
A Clear and Consistent Lesson Structure
All lessons follow a consistent structure designed to help students succeed:
Recall – Learning Intent – Model – Practise – Assess – Feedback
This consistency helps students know what to expect in every lesson. It reduces unnecessary distractions and allows them to focus fully on learning.
-
Lessons begin with short recall activities to strengthen memory and revisit prior knowledge.
-
Teachers clearly explain what students are learning and why it matters.
-
New ideas are carefully modelled so students can see expert thinking in action.
-
Students practise new skills with support before working independently.
-
Teachers regularly check understanding and address misconceptions.
-
Feedback is timely and focused on improvement.
By building lessons in this way, we help students develop deep understanding and long-term retention of knowledge.
Teaching Students How to Learn
We do not simply teach content - we teach students how to learn effectively.
Students are explicitly taught:
-
How to revise effectively
-
How to organise their notes
-
How to reflect on feedback
-
How to manage their time
-
How to study independently
At Key Stage 5, this develops into structured independent study, where students build the habits required for university, apprenticeships and employment.
High Expectations for All
We have high expectations of every student. Lessons are designed to be challenging and ambitious, with support provided where needed. We believe that students benefit from being stretched and from experiencing the satisfaction of overcoming challenge.
Teachers know their students well. Planning is informed by assessment data, reading ages and individual learning profiles. Adaptive teaching ensures that barriers to learning are removed without lowering expectations.
Students with additional needs are supported through high-quality classroom teaching, targeted interventions and specialist input where required. Inclusion is central to everything we do.
Homework and Independent Study
Homework is purposeful and supports classroom learning.
At Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, students complete weekly work through the SPARX learning platforms in Maths, English and Science. These platforms adapt to each student’s level and provide immediate feedback. Teachers use this information to address gaps in learning.
Other subjects set homework in line with our whole-school schedule, ensuring workload is manageable and meaningful.
At Sixth Form, homework is replaced by structured independent study time, helping students develop advanced study skills and self-discipline.
Assessment
Assessment at NSSFC is designed to support progress and improvement.
We use assessment to:
-
Identify gaps in knowledge and understanding
-
Inform teaching and curriculum planning
-
Help students understand how to improve
-
Track progress over time
-
Ensure students are on course to meet or exceed their targets
Ongoing (Formative) Assessment
In every lesson, teachers check understanding through questioning, retrieval practice, discussion and live feedback. Students respond to feedback regularly and are encouraged to reflect on how to improve their work.
Summative Assessment
Students complete formal assessments at key points during the year. At Key Stage 3, these measure progress against age-related expectations. At Key Stage 4 and 5, assessments are aligned to GCSE and A Level criteria.
Leaders analyse assessment information carefully to ensure curriculum strengths are maintained and gaps are addressed swiftly.
A Culture of Reflection and Continuous Improvement
We are a reflective and improvement-focused school.
Teaching quality is supported and strengthened through:
-
Regular learning walks and drop-ins
-
Bi-annual subject reviews
-
Student and staff voice
-
Careful analysis of assessment data
-
Instructional coaching through StepLab
Quality assurance is not about judgement; it is about identifying strengths and ensuring consistency. We focus on patterns over time rather than isolated events.
We invest heavily in professional development so that our teachers continue to refine and strengthen their practice. This ensures that students benefit from the highest quality teaching every day.
Our Commitment
Our aim is simple:
-
Consistent, high-quality teaching in every classroom
-
Clear routines and high expectations
-
Ambitious curriculum design
-
Purposeful assessment and feedback
-
Inclusive support for every learner
Through this approach, we ensure that all students at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College are supported to achieve their full potential.
